Environmentally Sound

LEED certification emphasizes the most comprehensive state of the art strategies for sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality and sets building code standards for more than 100 communities in the U.S. and GSA.

2000 Tower Oaks Boulevard was the first building in the Washington D.C. Metro area to achieve LEED Platinum® certification and was designed to achieve an ENERGY STAR rating of 87.

LEED Platinum® was achieved through strategic building design and mindful daily operations in the following categories:

  • Sustainable Site:  A high albedo (white) roof on the building and a vegetated (green) roof over the parking garage minimize the building’s contribution to the heat island effect.
  • Water Efficiency: Water usage is 41% lower than a typical office building through water-efficient practices for sinks and bathrooms.
  • Energy & Atmosphere: Designed to use 28% less energy than a typical office building through a high-efficiency curtain wall, controlled heating and cooling, tenant controlled energy management and more.
  • Materials & Resources: Over 22% of the building was constructed with recycled materials and sourced regionally.
  • Innovation & Design: 100% of the building's electrical use is offset by purchasing green e-certified wind power.
